600000 Accords Affected in Honda Recall Campaign

24 July, 2015

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has announced a Honda Accord recall that will impact nearly 600,000 mid-size vehicles in the United States and Canada. The recall is over a damaged power steering hose that has the possibility of leading to an engine fire.

Recall needed because of fire

The recall impacts Accord vehicles from the model years 2003 through 2007, but only those with V8 motors.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the power steering hose and connectors on the Accord vehicles might be ruined from prolonged exposure to motor heat. They may now be to a point where a leak could develop. Power steering fluid leaked onto a hot motor could lead to a fire inside the engine compartment.

One incident of engine fire was reported, and that led to the recall. No injuries or crashes have come from the issue though.

Replacement components are not yet available

Owners can expect to have their vehicles checked and hoses swapped out for free, but it may not occur in the next month or two. The hoses needed to replace the part are out of production, so Honda will need to re-manufacture the hoses. That could take quite a while.

Ed Miller of Honda explained:

“We’re going to start making them and getting them out there as soon as we can.”

Make sure you get your automobile inspected right away if you think there could be a leak, Miller said.

Reliability to end

The Honda Accord has consistently been a top-seller in its class. It is second only to the Toyota Camry. The cause of its popularity, no doubt, has much to do with its reputation for dependability. However, that reputation may presently be at risk. The car maker recalled more automobiles than any other manufacturer in 2011.

This recall is really an expansion of an earlier recall of 2007 and 2008 model year Acura TLs. Honda recalled 52,615 of those before expanding it to other Accords. The 2012 top nation’s recall list may include Honda again this year after the recall was extended.
