The Dodge Durango, put to rest in 2008 and resurrected again 2011, is nearing its final days. By 2016, it will be eliminated in support of the Jeep Grand Cherokee.
Fiat SpA bought Chrysler and all its makes after the bailout. The idea that the brand new owner had was to get rid of all redundancies in the line. For instance, The Dodge Durango should be shut down because it is too comparable to the Jeep Grand Cherokee.
Jeep Grand Cherokee in 2016
Fiat’s CEO Sergio Marchionne told Automobile Magazine this week that the 2016 Jeep Grand Cherokee will get a fresh platform and maybe a new look. He also said the Durango will be put to sleep for the last time.
The 2016 Jeep Grand Cherokee is expected to come with the choice of a V6 or V8 motor, and with either four-wheel or rear-wheel drive. In order to comply with increasingly strict fuel economy rules, it will even likely come with some new fuel-conserving technology.
According to Torque News:
“These engines will likely utilize some modern induction technology from across the pond which could include Fiat’s MultiAir technology or maybe even forced induction, so that these new engines would offer as much improvement in fuel economy as they do in power output.”
After 2014, the Dodge Avenger will even be taken out of production, according to Automobile Magazine. The automobile was introduced in 1995 but terminated in 2000. Then, it was brought back in 2008 and given a make-over in 2011. Now, the automobile will be ended again. The revision will not last for long.
Durango earns safety praise
The Durango was named the “Best Family Cars of 2012″ and has been given nine other industry honors such as the IIHS “Top Safety Pick” award. Parent’s Magazine and Edmunds.com have both given the automobile a lot of awards.
The car is still loved by Dodge’s President and CEO Reid Bigland in spite of the decision to eliminate it:
“We are honored that Edmunds.com and Parents have featured the Dodge Durango on this exclusive list. Dodge is committed to providing quality products to our customers that are safe, innovative and family-friendly, while doing so with passionate styling that sets us apart.”
It will be that way for now, anyway.
