What Draws You to a Movie

16 May, 2016

What is the common denominator in your list of favorite movies? Action, drama, romance, science fiction? A certain actor or actress? A favorite director or screen writer? For me, a movie has to be quotable. If quoting it still brings a smile to my face years later, it was a great movie. I don’t think any of his movies would make it in my top ten list, but Arnold Schwarzenegger made a career out of quotable one liners such as: “I’ll be back” and Hasta la vista baby”. Okay maybe his muscles, accent and overall good looks had something to do with it, but I’d like to think it is because I am not alone in liking quotes.
That being said, I came across a quote today from one of the greatest motivational speakers of our time, Zig Ziglar. I keep several of his quotes handy for just the right occasion, but I had never heard this one before today. “People often say that motivation doesn’t last. Well neither does bathing-that’s why we recommend it daily.”
It’s so simple, yet so profoundly true. Most important things in life require repetition. Eating, breathing, bathing. Having clean clothes, dishes or just about anything. A successful career depends on being responsible enough to go to work every day. As a whole, I think we succeed at these daily tasks (for the sake of those around you, I hope you at least have bathing down ). So why is it that a New Year’s resolution typically won’t make it out of January. Come February it is ancient news and you start to run into friends who ask about the goal you were so excited about just one month ago.
Most of my clients come to me when they hit rock bottom. They don’t know what else to do. They can’t see the big picture in there situation and feel absolutely hopeless. That is when they seek help from someone like me. I am very glad that they do reach out to me in those times. I love to see that glimmer of hope reappear in there eyes as they begin to look forward to the future again. You don’t have to get to that point though. Don’t wait for goose bumps or a big emotional surge, get out there everyday and make the choice to give your financial picture a bath! Maybe it is as simple as packing a lunch. Perhaps you have put off contributing to your 401k simply because you don’t know exactly what a 401k is? Take some small steps today, that will make a huge impact on your tomorrow.
