What Drives You Dollarsandsensemoneytips

As I dipped the brush into the paint can for what seemed like the 3,000,256,256,524,625th time, and I was about to complain about my wrist getting tired, my thoughts immediately drifted to my Dad……

Number one, he makes painting look incredibly easy, but also because of the tireless hours that he put in trying to provide for his wife and three boys! My Dad grew up in the projects and by definition, grew up poor. He bounced around a lot for various reasons and really had no stability.

I don’t know where his drive came from, but he served our Nation in Vietnam, earned his master’s in education (I think my mom might deserve 1/2 of that degree), kicked the generational legacy of alcoholism, and has loved one woman for 44 years and raised three men to carry on his legacy.

Most of his career, he worked a second job in addition to being a Guidance Counselor. One such job was as a painter. He tirelessly worked late hours and weekends with a brush in hand to put food on the table and ensure we had a roof over our heads. I can’t paint without thinking about my Dad and I hope that will never go away.

To see my Dad’s progress is inspiring. In a lot of ways, my Dad is my drive. I won’t let him down. I will pick up the baton and run as hard as I can for the next generation.

So rather than focusing on a slight pain in my wrist, I will smile and be thankful for a job that allows me to be with my bride doing projects on the weekend and turn my thoughts towards building on the foundation that my Dad laid for me.

What drives you?
